Fatigue Q & A

What is fatigue?

Fatigue is a feeling of constant, extreme tiredness that doesn’t improve with rest.

Feeling tired at the end of the day or after a hectic event is normal, and a good night’s sleep usually restores your energy levels. If you feel tired all the time though, that’s not normal. Never-ending exhaustion that makes the smallest tasks seem like hard work is a sign that there’s something amiss.

Untreated fatigue can develop into a chronic problem that affects concentration, reduces motivation, and has a detrimental impact on your emotional and physical health.

What causes fatigue?

Fatigue is not uncommon in people who don’t get enough exercise. If you feel fatigued, it’s worth looking at how much exercise you’re getting and try to do more. Exercise improves circulation, boosts mood, helps with weight management, and keeps you strong and healthy. It’s also energizing, so although you might feel weary immediately after exercising, your overall energy levels will rise.

Other common causes of fatigue include:

  • Unhealthy diet
  • Dehydration
  • Anemia
  • Cancer
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Diabetes
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Menopause
  • Chronic pain

Insomnia, sleep apnea, and other sleep disorders are another common cause of fatigue. Good quality sleep is essential for your health, and not getting enough sleep can cause serious health problems.

Mental health conditions like anxiety and depression and the effects of chronic stress frequently cause fatigue as well.

How is fatigue treated?

Treatment for fatigue is dependent on the cause, so making an accurate diagnosis is vital in order for you to get the right treatment. To get to the bottom of your fatigue, Dr. Diaz discusses your symptoms in great detail, carries out a thorough physical exam, and runs a range of diagnostic tests.

Once the underlying cause is known, Dr. Diaz creates an individualized treatment plan that includes a range of therapies that address not only the condition itself but also aim to improve your overall health.

For instance, if you have a hormone imbalance that’s causing fatigue, treatment would involve taking medication to rebalance the hormones. Dr. Diaz uses bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), which uses hormones that are identical to those your body naturally produces.

In addition to the prescription for BHRT, your treatment plan might also include information and support to help you with changes to your diet, weight loss, smoking cessation, managing stress, and other relevant lifestyle modifications.
